I will assume you have some kind of router in your residence, if so, can you log into the web interface of it and determine what the ip address of it is? What is it showing for the default gateway, its IP address. Your flatmate won't be able to ping anything on the 172.16.x.x address range as those addresses are not routable, they will never see each other. Can you connect to the internet with your Thinkpad (you didn't mention it so just checking). Have you turned off turned off any and all firewalls and tried connecting?
